Guide: WhatsApp Mute vs Everything you need to know
Most of us use WhatsApp on a daily basis to connect with friends, family and even companies. Since WhatsApp does not require a username, anyone who has your number can send you a message. The result is that you end up receiving a lot of spam or annoying messages. To avoid such messages have the two cool features in WhatsApp – mute and block. Each is used to restrict messages, but in different ways. So what’s the difference between them? Without further ado, let’s get started.
What is block
Blocking is a hard way to stop messages from someone. When you block a contact, you cannot have a conversation with them as blocking restricts all types of communication: direct chats, voice calls, and video calls.
What is muted
Mute is a friendly alternative to blocking. Easy said words, mute means to mute notifications. When you mute a chat, you will not receive audio notifications every time the named contact sends you a message directly. To check for new messages from that person, you need to check the contact’s mute chat in WhatsApp.
Groups and personal chats
While you can mute personal chats and groups, you can only block individual chats. The block feature is not available for groups. You must leave the group to stop receiving messages. There are two important things to remember when using this one features
- When you block a personal chat, the group chats with them remain unaffected. This means that even though you cannot contact each other personally, the blocked contact can still send messages in common groups. Both can view each other’s messages in groups.
- In the same way, you will receive notifications for the muted contact in group conversations. Muting them individually will not affect group chats. You must mute a group to turn off notifications. And if you mute groups, it doesn’t change its members’ personal chat notifications.
What happens to last seen, online status and profile picture
When you block a contact, that person will not be able to see your last seen, profile picture or online status when you are active on WhatsApp. However, the muted contact can view all those details.
What happens to WhatsApp calls
Blocking someone will stop all WhatsApp communication with them, including calls. You cannot make or receive voice or video calls. However, nothing happens to conversations or calls in other apps. The blocked person can still contact you outside of WhatsApp. When you mute a chat, the muted contact can still call you. Interestingly, mute doesn’t mute call notifications – it just mutes message notifications.
What happens to previous conversations
If you block or mute someone, nothing will happen to previous conversations. Those chats will remain on WhatsApp unless you manually delete them.
Message status
WhatsApp has three symbols to show message status. A single gray check mark means the message has been sent but not delivered, two gray check marks indicate the message has been delivered and two blue check marks indicate that the message has been read.
When a blocked person sends you a message, they will only see one gray check mark. Since you cannot send a message to a blocked contact, there is no message status for you. On the contrary, the message status follows the normal rules for muted contacts. They get two gray check marks when a message is delivered and it turns blue when you read the message.
Have muted or blocked contacts been removed from WhatsApp
No. You don’t have to worry because nothing like that will happen. The contact details will remain on both WhatsApp and your phone
They are notified
No. The other person will not be notified when you mute or block them.
How to Tell if you are blocked or muted
There is no way to tell if the sound is muted. But when it comes to blocking, even if there’s no direct way to do that, you can figure it out from a number of things. For example, if the person’s profile picture or online status is missing, or if the messages always have one gray check mark, you should know that something is wrong. But even if they are all three, it doesn’t necessarily mean you have been blocked.
Can you block a muted person and vice versa
Yes, you can block a muted person. There is no limit to that. Likewise, you can mute a blocked contact, but it doesn’t make sense since the blocked person can’t send you a message anyway.
What happens when you unblock or unmute
If you unmute a chat, you will receive a notification about the future messages. If you unblock a person, you will receive new messages from them. However, you will not receive the messages sent while the sender was blocked.
How to Mute
Follow these steps to mute a personal chat or group chat: Step 1: Launch WhatsApp and open the chat you want to mute. Step 2: Tap the three dots icon in the top right corner and select Mute notifications from the menu.
Step 3: A bang-up will appear. Select the duration for which you want to mute notifications and tap Ok.
If you want the notifications to appear silently in the notification tray, you can enable Show notifications in this step. Otherwise, you have to open WhatsApp to view notifications from the muted chat. You can also touch and hold the conversation in the chat list and click the mute icon at the top. To unmute, open chat and tap the three dots icon. Then select Un notifications from the menu.
How to Block
Follow these steps to block a contact: Step 1: Go to the chat you want to block and tap the three dots icon in the top right corner. Select More from the menu.
Step 2: Under More, select Block. A bang-up will appear. Tap Block.
Repeat the steps and tap Unlock to unblock. To see all your blocked contacts, go to WhatsApp Settings> Account> Privacy> Blocked Contacts.
Use them wisely
While muting and blocking are both used to avoid people, they are very different from each other. One is only used to turn off notifications and the other stops all forms of communication from any contact on WhatsApp. You may want to mute your family groups or your distant relatives who keep sending good morning messages. Instead, use block for your annoying ex or brands that spam a lot. Now that you know them both, choose your weapon wisely.
