Guide: Using Background Blur in Microsoft Teams: Guide

Microsoft responded to Slack’s growing popularity with the introduction of Microsoft Teams. And the software giant keeps adding new ones features to meet consumer demand. It has also quickly adapted to a growing trend of video calling apps, with many dealing with cluttered wallpapers or insufficient lighting while on a call. In this post, we will do that guide you to how to add background blur for video calls in Microsoft Teams. Microsoft Teams recently introduced video wallpapers that allow you to hide or change the background during video calls. The Background Blur option in the Microsoft Teams app detects your face and lets you blur the background during video calls. One of the suitable ways to mask your background and make it look a little pleasant. Well, it is not new feature precisely because Skype also offers similar background blur feature along with virtual backgrounds. You can use the background blur option to mask the background to keep it out of focus. You will also find other related video calls tips for Microsoft Teams in this post. Let’s start.

True is the background blur option in Microsoft Teams

With Microsoft Teams, you can create multiple channels in a team and add members to them. You can use the Meet Now option from any channel to start the group video call with the members.

When you tap Meet Now button in a channel you will be given the option to add a topic and start the video call. From the video call screen, you will see the many options in the floating menu, as shown in the screenshot below. Tap the three-dot menu and it will open another submenu of advanced video features for Microsoft Teams.

Select Show Background Effects from the context menu and it will open the Background Settings side menu. You will also find a lot of options for the video background. Tap the second blur effect and Teams will ask you to preview or apply the effect directly in the video. I recommend that you preview the effect first as it may not work as advertised in certain situations.

The good news is that other participants cannot see the live effect while you test the background with a live preview option. Note: When using the background blur effect or any other background during video calls, try not to move too much during calls. It leaves a blinding effect on the face. So your video feed will come across as strange.

Tips For a better video calling experience

You can always make the meetings better and more effective instead of letting them be a list of random video calls. Here are a few tips

Add subject to meetings

If you are creating a meeting with members of the channel, you must add a topic before starting the meeting. It may seem like a minor detail, but it makes the video call easily searchable. Very useful if you want to find a specific meeting or a detail related to it at the end of a month. I like how Microsoft Teams allows you to invite the members of the other channel to the current video feed. You can also glimpse the attendees from the side panel.

Take notes

During video calls, you may want to take notes (meeting minutes) for later use. While on a call, you can tap the three-dot menu on the bottom bar and select View meeting notes. Type in the meeting comments and press Enter. Microsoft offers a text adjustment ribbon at the top that allows you to choose options such as Bold, Italic, Highlight, and so on.

After the meeting ends, members can view those notes in the channel chat with the topic of the meeting as the title. During video calls you can also chat with the team members. We use it all the time. When our developer meeting happens, the interns and junior developers use the chat feature to ask the doubts and questions to the senior developer handling the video call.

The presenter / organizer reviews those messages and addresses them if any issues are shared during a meeting. Practice makes the whole conversation seamless – you don’t have to disturb the administrator during video calls. The good news is that all chat is stored in the channel during the video call.

Share Screens during meetings

Microsoft also offers a screen sharing option, which can be incredibly useful in certain situations. When you are having a conversation with hundreds of members in a video call, you may want to share the screen with them to discuss a particular topic in detail.

From the video call screen, tap on the cameo button, and it lets you choose from the many options. You can share the current screen, show PowerPoint presentations, open files from OneDrive or PC, or use the whiteboard feature to draw the subject.

Use Microsoft Teams like a pro

Background blur during video calls in Microsoft Teams can be useful when you join the digital meeting from anywhere. You don’t have to worry much about the background after blurring it from your video feed. You can also use the change background option if you don’t want other family members to come in and accidentally disrupt the meeting.
