Half of the movie sees him channeling both Iñárritu and DiCaprio as he throws himself into something of a polar spin in The Revenant (scripted by real Revenant writer Mark L. Smith). Clooney’s sick scientist Augustine Lofthouse (a character name that sounds like he’s upset with a gazebo in a PG Wodehouse novel) must navigate a blizzard, fend off wolves, and brave icy waters, all while caring for a mysterious young woman who has entered in its orbit. Presumably there is a deleted scene where he fights a walrus. As a director, Clooney whips up a convincingly bleak tundra. And Lofthouse is a dark but compelling character, bent over with regrets but moving forward with the determination of a man who knows he has a chance to finally set things right.
Starship Troopers
Starship Troopers is set in the distant future, when humanity has begun to colonize worlds beyond the borders of our galaxy. Earth has provoked a benign species of insect-like aliens to violently retaliate against our planet, which it suddenly and correctly perceives as hostile. Interpreting what are obviously self-defense tactics as more gestures of aggression, humanity organizes its global forces and invests in a grossly outdated interstellar war. The rhetoric throughout is unmistakably fascist: Earth’s expendable infantrymen, among whom our high school-age ex-player naturally ranks, are galvanized by vapid slogans, which they regurgitate on command with sincerity as they head for the slaughter.

The bond between Edward Furlong’s 10-year-old John Connor and the Terminator is sweet and funny and, yes, really touching. (Furlong wasn’t the best child actor in the world, but he does better in the lighter scenes with Schwarzenegger than in the moments where he’s required to show a tremendous range of emotions.) But the T-101’s role change works so well because viewers — both then and now — don’t necessarily expect Schwarzenegger’s deadpan killing machine to be able to serve as a Jiminy Cricket-like moral compass. The T-101’s shift from villain to hero also shows uncertain faith in heart from “Terminator 2”.

A bristling soundtrack by Hans Zimmer’s protégé Henry Jackman spurs escapes whenever the more snappy dialogue signals, and the veteran design team knows clearly. how to paint a beautiful picture in three dimensions. Thematically, the heroine’s lesson in self-esteem is difficult to discuss, though hardly new for this type of film. San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge serves as a backdrop for the monsters’ confrontation with a cyclopean robot. In outer space, an almost mesmerizing setting from March of the Clones achieves epic impact because of the stereoscopic depth of field.

What follows is a cascade of events, not a second wasted. This is a future where some humans have evolved enough to have telekinesis (or ‘TK’ as it’s called in the movie) and events lead Joe to meet Sara (Emily Blunt), a country girl who knows how to handle a shotgun. . There are sci-fi movies that deal with the subject of time travel and then there’s Looper, which feels original and fun, with a story full of interesting twists. Despite the flash and slick visuals, director Rian Johnson always keeps the plot at the forefront.
Blade Runner
The eye-popping thriller was “Alien” director Ridley Scott’s first American film, a box office disappointment lost to audiences horrified by the glossy, hazy portrayal of the British visualist of the future. Critics, many of them anyway, insulted him for drone of Ford’s narration and the final Hollywood optimist, but the film persevered. Now Scott has remade the movie, and it’s back on the big screen. The director deleted the narration (added against his and Ford’s wishes) and the coda pasted (these sweeping scenes are actually leftovers from Stanley Kubrick’s “The Shining”).
