Guide: Sandboxie vs Windows Sandbox: Comparison and Review

When you install applications that you get from unofficial sources, we think that sometimes you may be concerned as to whether the application they install is safe or not. If it happens to you, you naturally look for apps that can create a safe environment. You will find Sandboxie vs Windows Sandbox as the best virtualization program to protect your computer’s system. Then you can get confused by both, which one is the best. To get rid of your confusion, here we will compare Sandboxie and Windows Sandbox in each section with a clear explanation.

availabilty

Windows Sandbox is baked into Windows 10 as long as you have the January update (version 1903) installed. Then you have to activate it via the Windows Features panel. Sandboxie requires you to download and install it, but the whole process is simple and straightforward. You can also use it on any version of Windows 10, including previous Windows operating systems up to Windows 7.

Ease

After activating Windows Sandbox, using it is quite easy. Launch it and you will be greeted with a virtualized Windows desktop, similar to the one you get after a fresh Windows installation. You can then install any application you want by downloading the installer directly from the Internet or by copying and pasting it from your desktop to Windows Sandbox. But there are a few things to keep in mind when using Windows Sandbox. First, you can’t access programs you have installed on your desktop, nor the files contained in them – you have to install everything from scratch or copy and paste the files you want to open. Second, Windows Sandbox will destroy everything when you close it, which means you have to start over every time. That can be somewhat annoying. But Sandboxie works very differently. You can easily open programs that you have already installed, but in an isolated container so that nothing comes out. And it’s easy to do that – open Sandboxie, right click on your sandbox (you can create multiple sandboxes) and you can open any program by typing in its name. Sandboxie also allows you to open frequently used programs such as your browser, email client and file explorer using shortcuts. Programs that open in Sandboxie have two hash symbols around the name of the application in the title bar. There will also be a clear border around a program to indicate its ‘sandbox’ nature. You can also install programs in Sandboxie from scratch. Open a browser in Sandboxie and download the program or use File Explorer to open the file installer directly from your hard drive. All installed programs, changes to existing programs, downloaded files, etc. Are temporary – they will be removed as soon as you end the sandbox. However, you can choose to save certain files generated with the Export content or Quick restore options for each sandbox.

Performance

Windows Sandbox has a noticeable impact on performance. I have found that interaction with programs and files inside is often delayed. This is not surprising, given that the computer has to run an extra copy of Windows on top of the regular desktop. However, your experience may be different. Sandboxie is not a serious drain on resources, especially since it does not need to run a separate copy of Windows. I usually use multiple sandboxes and still communicate with everything quite comfortably.

Safety

Windows Sandbox is extremely secure. For starters, it runs in a completely different environment than the regular desktop. Therefore, every program and process is completely isolated. Nothing comes in or out unless you choose to explicitly copy or paste items to and from the Windows Sandbox. And when you close it, all data in Windows Sandbox will be completely erased. If you want to test a sketchy program, open a suspicious file, or even interact with a shady website, Windows Sandbox is perfect. Sandboxie is also safe. Although it doesn’t run on a virtualized platform like Windows Sandbox, any programs you start with it run in isolation from the rest of the operating system. Any changes you make, or even updates to sandbox applications, are only temporary. However, you can choose to make certain changes permanent. For example, if you use Chrome within Sandboxie, you can have changes to your bookmarks, passwords and other forms of browsing data transferred outside of the sandbox. This requires your consent and involves security costs.

Learning curve

Windows Sandbox has a negligible learning curve. Fire it up, and you can use it just like your regular desktop. Of course you have to install everything you want to test from scratch every time. That’s an inconvenience that you have to get used to. On the other hand, Sandboxie can be confusing for new users. It has a multitude of settings, although a few sessions trying it out should put you at ease with how things work.
