Guide: Pocket Casts vs Castbox: Comparison and Review

Pocket Casts is one of the most popular and loved podcasts apps, but the latest update, released in April, ruined it for most users. Well I like the new design and like it a lot better. During my research, I found another podcast app, Castbox, which seems to be steadily gaining users. It’s worth noting that the new Pocket Casts design is still in beta and developers have released a new update that has addressed some of these nuances, which we’ll discuss in detail later. 1. User interface and usability

I like the new design that organizes everything in tabs. There is one for all your podcasts you have subscribed to, filters where you can discover new episodes and episodes in progress. A discovery tab to find new interesting podcasts and Profile for statistics and settings.

Castbox takes a similar approach with a bar at the bottom that says Discover, Library where podcasts you subscribe to, Personal is your profile, and the Settings and Community tab. The latter is a Twitter-style social media platform where users can discuss podcasts. A cool way to meet like-minded people.

There are some additional options under the Explore and Library tabs. They are categories to find niche podcasts and audiobooks where you mainly find classics.

Pocket Casts also offers categories under the Discovery tab. Just scroll a bit to find it.

Both apps are well designed, but I like Castbox more. Pocket Casts has a nice user interface, but the latter is more functional. Categories can be accessed without scrolling, and Library makes it easy to switch between favorites, new episodes, playlists, and downloads.

2. Search and manage podcasts

In Pocket Casts, under the Discovery tab, you can change the location to find more relevant podcasts. It is set to US by default. Castbox asks you to choose your location when you first log in. You can of course change this later.

As mentioned before, you can find podcasts by network and category in both podcasts apps.

Other than that, both apps come with lists of podcasts like trending, top podcasts, editor’s choice, and so on. That’s more of a personal choice, depending on your preferences.

3. Listening experience

Pocket Casts makes it easy to subscribe to top picks by offering a ‘+’ sign. Castbox offers the quick registration button only if you choose a category. Well, Pocket Casts does the same.

Pocket Casts lost a lot of users after their March update. A common complaint was the archive featureAfter you complete a podcast, it won’t be grayed out, but instead archived and removed from the list. That caused confusion, after which the May update provided a way to archive or mark as played. Tap the Podcast Episode to find this option.

The updates have solved this problem. You can mark an episode as played to make it gray or use the archive feature to remove it from the list. You can decide whether to display archived episodes or not individually. That helps users who want to distinguish between episodes they listened to (mark as played) and episodes they just skipped (archived). Honestly, I think this system is better with the new update.

Another complaint was the global settings rather than the custom settings for each podcast. Again, you’ll have to dig deeper, but it’s there. Tap the Settings icon and select Playback Effects to set it to custom for that podcast.

Castbox offers even more ways to customize your podcast experience. You can decide how many episodes you want to download (default is 3) instead of just downloading the next episode like in Pocket Casts. That can be tailor-made for any show.

There is Waze integration for users who listen to podcasts while driving. You can pause the podcast when notifications from other apps are announced while you are driving, or you can use the car controls to manage podcast episodes. Both apps support Google Home and Assistant as well as Alexa.

Both podcast apps allow users to skip forward and back, set a sleep timer and save podcasts to a favorites list. However, Pocket Casts also allows you to listen quickly, turn up the volume for when you’re outside and trim parts of podcasts where no one is talking.

While you can mark any episode as a favorite in Pocket Casts, Castbox lets you create multiple playlists to better sort favorite episodes. In Pocket Casts this is feature is called Filters.

4. Social factor

How do you know which podcasts to subscribe to? What are you talking about that last episode that made you wonder? Castbox comes with a commenting system that allows users to participate in discussions for any of your subscribed podcasts.

Then there’s the Community tab where you can follow people, interact with them through comments, like their comments, and use hashtags to make the experience healthy.

5. For podcasters

Castbox offers two tools for podcasters. The first is Creator’s Studio, where you can create podcasts, interact with followers using comments, and track results and statistics. The second is Livecast which allows you to go live anytime instead of uploading recorded episodes.

To help creators make money, Castbox has partnered with a blockchain-based solution called ContentBox. The creators are rewarded in Ethereum powered ERC-20 token called BOX.

6. Prices and platform

Pocket Casts is available for Android, iOS, and on the web and costs $ 3.99. Castbox is free and ad-supported. It comes with a pro version that costs you $ 1.99 a month and removes ads, allows unlimited subscriptions (100 in the free version), and prioritizes your homepage. If you are a creator, Castbox is free to use.

Cast your vote

Pocket Casts is cheaper, has a better UI, and offers some cool features play features you will use it daily. Castbox is more suited to creators looking for a way to monetize their content. That said, if you’re a social bee and you need to interact and discuss podcasts, Castbox is the only platform of its kind I know of that makes this possible.
