How to View All Open Windows for Any iPad App – Guide

When you use an app like Safari on the iPad, a single window is rarely enough. While it’s easier than ever to create new windows and window pairs on the iPad, finding windows is an entirely different matter. But it’s okay – there’s a new feature on iPadOS 15 who wants to make this easier for you. It’s called the Shelf.

How to find all open windows for an iPad app using the shelf

You can think of Shelf as a version of the Dock, but limited to a specific application. When you have multiple windows open for an application, the shelf shows up automatically at the bottom of the screen. It stays there for a few seconds and then disappears, but you can bring it back: Tap the new multitasking menu button (three dots) at the top of the screen. (This only works if you are viewing a full-screen window.) However, a more reliable way to see all open windows is to use the Dock. slide up at the bottom of the screen to reveal the Dock and tap the app icon that is already open on the screen. Alternatively, you can tap and hold the application icon and choose the “Show all windows” option. Once the bookshelf is open, you can tap any window to switch to it. Swiping up in a preview window will close it.

How to find all open windows of an application using App Switcher

while the shelf feature it’s great, it’s not intuitive – and you can only see small previews of the windows for a few seconds. The most reliable way to find all open windows of an app is using the old and reliable App Switcher. On your iPad, swipe up from the bottom Home and hold for a second to open App Switcher. Here you will see a list of all open applications and windows. If an app has multiple windows open, you’ll see a small Windows icon next to it (it looks like two cascading squares). By tapping it, you will only see all windows for the application in question. This will include split view pairs, sliding windows and full screen windows. You can tap a window to switch to it. And if you want to close a window, just swipe up. Please share this article if you like it!
