How to Use Spatial Audio in Apple AirPods – Guide
During the WWDC keynote in June 2020, Apple announced something that piqued our interest and looked like a potential game changer: Space Audio. Spatial audio is essentially Apple’s answer to Dolby Atmos for headphones and Sony’s PS5 3D audio. Apple Spatial Audio is designed to deliver surround sound and 3D audio through headphones superiorly through AirPods Pro and AirPods Max. O feature made it to movies and TV shows as part of iOS 14 in September 2020 and then launched on Apple Music on June 7 at Apple’s WWDC 2021 conference. Since the summer, Spatial Audio has been expanded on tvOS for use with the new Apple TV 4K with AirPods Pro and Max, and can now be used with Macs equipped with the company’s latest M1 chip. Apple Spatial Audio takes 5.1, 7.1 and Dolby Atmos signals and applies directional audio filters that adjust the frequencies each ear hears so sounds can be placed virtually anywhere in 3D space. Sounds seem to come from the front, from the sides, from behind and even from above. The objective is to recreate the sound experience of a movie theater. This is not the first technology of its kind. Dolby Atmos for headphones has been around for some time now, Sony has its 360 Reality Audio format for music, offers 3D audio on some PS4 games through its Platinum Wireless headset, and is going all-in in 3D audio for the PS5. Apple’s Spatial Audio, however, is unique, at least when it comes to movie soundtracks, because it not only provides virtualized surround and Atmos sound, but also tracks head movement using accelerometers and gyroscopes in AirPods Pro and AirPods Max to accurately position the audio. It even tracks the position of the iPhone or iPad where you are watching the movie to ensure that the sound is also placed in relation to the screen. This means that even if you turn your head or reposition the device, the dialogue with the actor remains anchored to the screen.
