Local app search is something on the best Android phones for a while now, but Android 12 changes the interface a bit. With the update, Google combines local app search into a more universal local search that will return results for contacts, apps and even system settings. That’s a bit of a confusing boon if you’re just reliant on searching apps. Also, having results mixed in with contacts and other data can be a little tricky. But there’s a new layer added to this that might help. Appsearch is a new development for Android 12 that allows developers to link not only their apps, but even functions and documents within those apps. For example, if you search for the word “new”, you will have the option to create a new Docs document or a new alarm in Clock. As a user, you just need to start searching and see what options are available to you. Here it is how to do it.

When searching for terms, contacts will be displayed first, followed by apps that have a matching function. For example, when searching for te in the search box, you will get a “Test Contact”, plus “Choose template” in the Docs application and “New text note” in Keep Notes. After that, you will get system settings like “Hotspot and tethering” and Pixel tips such as “Send text messages from your computer”. Finally, after all that, you will have the option to search Google if none of these options match what you are looking for. Also, at the time of this writing, only Google apps have functions in this menu. A search for new gives you the option of “New anonymous tab” in Chrome or “Create new alarm” in the Clock app, but there is no option for New message in Facebook messenger, for example. AppSearch is a new development, so we wouldn’t be surprised to see more apps tied to this functionality in the future. Needless to say, if you are looking for an app name, you may need to scroll down past contacts to access the relevant apps. It is important to note that a search is limited to app names and functions within apps. Searching for “Pizza” won’t yield Little Caesars, and we’re pretty confident this isn’t just a condemnation of Little Caesars cooking. We would like to see the Play Store search option in the menu. This seems like an obvious oversight, especially for search terms that don’t return a result other than a Google search. Otherwise, we like how local search works and are excited to use it on Android 12.
