Guide: How to use Evernote Safely and Securely

With Evernote’s price change, many people want to switch to a different service. I’m happy with Evernote, but I still realize I need to support it up regularly. Of course it is in the cloud, but if the price gets too high I would consider switching. It is my data and I am ultimately responsible for it. I will not allow it to be taken hostage by anyone. Here is how to keep your options open and keep your data safe, especially if your account is hacked. Backups are the key to protecting your Evernote | Shutterstock

Manually export Evernote data

We have covered how to make a manual backupup when talking about switching to OneNote or Google Keep. To view, on the Mac or PC, go to the File menu and select Export. You will then be given a choice of different sizes. If you want to be able to restore it within Evernote, choose .enex.

Do you want to get more out of Evernote? View our Complete Guide If you just want the information to access it later, HTML gives you more flexibility. If you have the trouble of a manual backupup you may as well use either method. The Windows versions offer you the option to export a notebook to .pdf. Unfortunately, at the time of writing, the Mac does not support .pdf export. You can print individual notes to .pdf, but that’s difficult for a large notebook.

Evernote database backupup

You can make Evernote part of your normal automatic backup strategy. If you’re using Apple’s Time Machine or other cloning software, the data is already there. Make sure you have a backupup makes for online backups or other methods up the Evernote folder on your computer. Currently they are located at: Mac: ~ / Library / Application Support / Evernote or ~ / Library / Containers / com.evernote.Evernote / Data / Library / Application Support / Evernote / PC: C: users[PC Name]AppDataLocalEvernoteEvernoteDatabases Your location may be different, but those are the default settings. Backups are always a good idea | Shutterstock In the event of a disaster, you must install Evernote and then restore your database. There are some other cool ways to use cloud-based services. Do you test your backups? You probably should. Here is how to do it on a Mac.

Zap it with Zapier

When using the free version of Evernote, you are limited in the number of devices you can install the Evernote app. If you keep your files on the Internet, the above backup methods will not work. The web version does not give you an export option. That’s where Zapier comes in. We’ve previously discussed Zapier’s competitor IFTTT. Zapier has many more integrations and options, but you pay for them if you need more than 100 promotions per month. Every new note was supported up is an action. The next-level plan is 1,000 actions for $ 20, so it’s still reasonable if you’re a regular Evernote user. New to IFTTT? Here are some fun ideas to get you started. After that, check out ideas for Pocket, locations, photos.

Once you’ve linked your Evernote to your IFTTT account, you can put those notes wherever you want. Zapier already has a ready-to-use Zap for backing up new notes from Evernote to Dropbox. You can use any system you want, such as Box or OneDrive. The big disadvantage of this option is that it will only deteriorate up up new notes. If you have a manual backupup and only need new notes up in the future this is a cheap and easy approach.

Support it all Up with CloudHQ

CloudHQ is useful for free Evernote users who don’t want to switch to Premium. This will automatically give you access to your content through another service. You can keep your notes in Evernote, but you can open PDFs of them in Google Drive.

Go cheap: combine them all

If you are looking for a one-time backupup of your data before downgrading, export the files and then back upup of the databases. Then use Zapier to make a backupup of the notes. If you’re using it more than Zapier’s free service, it’s time to upgrade Zapier or switch to another service. If you pay for Zapier, you can use it for other things, such as a backupup up your Google data. Vdovichenko Denis | Shutterstock If you’ve already switched to the web for Evernote, CloudHQ allows you to pay from month to month if you don’t qualify for the free version. Let them back up your existing database from Evernote to another service. Then cancel the service and use Zapier to go back up your new notes.

Keep your Evernote options open

Whichever option you choose, don’t rely on Evernote to keep all of your data. If your account is hacked or you lock yourself out with two-factor authentication, you will need the data elsewhere. If Evernote raises its prices again, you can easily walk out without your data getting stuck in their system. READ ALSO: How to Search Evernote Like a Pro
