Guide: How To Transfer a Playlist from iPhone to iTunes

Playlists have become an integral part of how we consume music. Since moving from CDs to streaming, we’ve curated our own music based on our mood, purpose, or many other reasons. Creating a playlist can take a long time, so wouldn’t it be cool if you could transfer a playlist from iPhone to iTunes or vice versa? Then it’s a good job! I have spent hours creating playlists. I have one for work, one for exercise, one for commuting, one for waiting, and one for when I want to slow down. I am old enough to remember mixtapes and the many hours I spent collecting and recording songs onto a single cassette tape and then onto a CD. The playlist is the modern equivalent of that. Making a playlist is the easy part. Selecting the music to go to that playlist is more difficult. Much more difficult. I’m going to walk you through how to create a playlist on an iPhone and then transfer it to iTunes so that you can enjoy it on whatever device you use.

If you also want to enjoy your playlist on your computer phone, you can. In fact, iTunes will go back automatically up your playlist as part of the standard backup procedure when you connect your iPhone to iTunes. However, you can import it manually. If you plan on sharing the playlist with others, you can send the XML file you just created and they can repeat the above process to get it on their phone. When they have all the available music, the playlist will fill normally. If they don’t have access to all of the music, they may see “Some songs in the file were not imported because they couldn’t be found.” If they are family, you can use Home Share to allow access to tracks. As long as the person you’re sharing with shares the same iTunes Store account, you can grant access to the songs from one library to another. Home Sharing depends on whether you’re using the same Apple ID, but if you’re a family, you can share the account to keep it simple. To a phone to Home Parts: You should now be able to access shared music on it phone. If you’ve imported a playlist into the phone, you should now be able to play all songs without seeing that message.
