How to Take Screenshot on Windows – Guide

As a software reviewer, I have to take a lot of screenshots every day. There’s no better way to show readers what a program actually looks like in operation. As I primarily review Windows software, I am familiar with the various ways to capture screens on this operating system. Almost every computer user needs to take a screenshot occasionally, even if it’s just to tell a colleague or an outside company what they see on the screen. It’s amazing how long it took to perfect this simple function. Windows has had the ability to take screenshots since the first PCs in the 1980s (the text-based option was different from today’s raster screenshots). Windows 10 introduced new ways to take screenshots like Snip & Sketch, and Windows 11 makes taking screenshots even smarter with the Snipping Tool. You can find all the details about the procedures on Microsoft’s latest operating system at How to Take screenshots in Windows 11, but it’s all about taking screenshots in Windows 10. Below, I’ll show you the different ways to capture your Windows 10 PC screen so you can make an informed decision about which method is best for you. you.

How to Take a screenshot in Windows

Cutting tool

The Snipping Tool has been around since Windows Vista. Windows warned a few years ago that the Snipping Tool was disappearing, but it still exists, even in Windows 11. The Snipping Tool has been removed from the Start menu’s list of apps, but it’s still easily accessible from the search bar. Click on New button to start the screen capture process. The default cut is rectangular, but you can also create freeform, full screen and window cuts. The Snipping Tool does not automatically save your screenshots – you have to manually save them in the tool before exiting – and automatically copies your screenshots to the clipboard.

To capture your entire screen, tap the Print Screen button button (sometimes referred to as PrtScn). Your screenshot will not be saved as a file, but will be copied to the clipboard. You will need to open an image editor (like Microsoft Paint), paste the screenshot into the editor, and save the file from there. You can also set the PrtScn key to open the Snip & Sketch tool by going to Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard and enabling the Use PrtScn key to open screen snippets option in the Print Screen shortcut.

Windows key + print screen

To capture the entire screen and automatically save the screenshot, tap Windows key + Print Screen. Your screen will dim briefly to indicate that you have just taken a screenshot, and the screenshot will be saved in the Images > Screenshots folder.

Alt + Print Screen

To take a quick screenshot of the active window, use the Alt + PrtScn key combination. This will capture the currently active window and copy the screenshot to the clipboard. You will need to open the screenshot in an image editor to save it.

game bar

You can use the Game Bar to take a screenshot whether you are playing or not. Press Windows key + G to bring up up the Game Bar. From here you can click on the screenshot button in the Game Bar or use the standard keyboard shortcut Windows Key + Alt + PrtScn to take a screenshot in full screen mode. To set a custom keyboard shortcut for the Game Bar screenshot, go to Settings > Games > Game Bar. Also, you need to enable Game Bar on this settings page, making sure you have enabled Record Game Clips, Screenshots and Shows with Game Bar.

Windows logo + volume down

If you are using a Microsoft Surface device, you can take a screenshot of the entire screen using the physical (well, physical medium) buttons – similar to any other phone or tablet. To do this, press and hold the Windows logo tap button at the bottom of the Surface screen and press the physical volume down button on the side of the tablet. The screen briefly dims and the screenshot is automatically saved in the Images > Screenshots folder.
