Guide: How to Secure Your Windows 10 PC: Tips and Tutorial

While we’ve spent a significant amount of time and a lot of brainpower breaking some of the myths surrounding Windows 10, there are some privacy and security concerns. I’ve written about securing your Android phone previously, so why not give Windows 10 a similar treatment? It’s time to update your Windows 10 machine | to secure MyImages – Micha / Shutterstock.com So here’s our attempt to really tighten the screws of the Windows 10 experience.

Turn everything off!

Okay, this may sound more extreme (sinister, even) than what it actually does. But all we’re suggesting is taking back access to everything Windows 10 has been generous with. Simultaneously press Windows key + i to go to the modern Settings window.

From here, click on Privacy and basically keep turning off everything on the right for every corresponding setting on the left. Again, it just sounds extreme and when used in the real world, it will not affect the performance of your PC in any way. For apps like your Camera, you can disable system-wide or choose individual apps that don’t need access to it camera

The same rule of thumb can be applied to other settings on the left here.

Wi-Fi feeling

Here is that controversial topic again. I’m sure you’re already bored reading about it, but we need to address it before we move on. We’ve talked about it before too, but now we’re doing things for extra security, even though it may not be 100% guaranteed.

So go back to the Settings window and this time click on Network and Internet and then click on Manage Wi-Fi Settings under the Wi-Fi area. Here, set both switches to OFF and rest a little easier.

Windows Defender

If you search for Defender from the Windows 10 search toolbar, you should be able to jump straight to the Windows Defender windows. Go to Settings here, then under Preview Submission, turn OFF the toggle for Better, faster protection by sending Microsoft information about possible security vulnerabilities that Windows Defender finds and Help us make Windows Defender better by sending Microsoft samples so we can use our anti- virus and malware both measure.

This will always ask you (the user) whether or not to send the report to Microsoft.

Disable CEIP

There just happens to be a hidden “Customer Experience Improvement Program (CEIP)” in Windows 10 that gathers information about your computer hardware, usage, and OS information for Microsoft. To turn this off, first open the Control Panel, click the Action Center icon, then click the Change Action Center Settings link. Type Customer Experience Improvement Program into the search box on the lower taskbar. Keep in mind that: If you notice that the options in this box are already greyed out (like mine), it’s because you already opted out of the program while installing Windows 10.

Then click on it to start the CEIP settings, where you need to select the radio button No, I do not want to participate in the program. Hit Save and that’s all you need to do for Microsoft to collect more information from your PC.

That’s all folks

These are the most effective steps to secure your Windows 10 PC, but if you have some extra tips let us know in our forum. If you have any questions about any of these steps, please stop by and ask your question.
