You start your day at work by opening your inbox, checking the news, checking out some social media, and clicking some links based on your intrigues on the topic. Before you know it, your Chrome browser is stuffed with tabs that surpass the embarrassing moments the Kardashians have had on reality TV. So, how do you keep tabs? Are you losing tabs in Chrome? 1. Tab management
Tab Manager is a good extension that does exactly what it sounds like. The default view gives you an icon overview of all open tabs in the currently open window and other windows. There is also a search bar from which you can quickly jump to a tab that you otherwise cannot find. On the right are options for Add Window, Pin Tabs, Remove Tabs, and Change Layout.
If you don’t like the layout of the icon view, just click the layout icon at the bottom right to get a different view. This view has more details about each tab with the ever-present search bar, and the options on the right (such as pinning and removing tabs) are also present. Above are also options to close the current tab and open a new one.
However, where this extension excels is its ability to search and display tabs from multiple windows of Chrome. Whether you have 2 (or more) windows of Chrome open, it will show you the list of all open tabs and you just need to click on the tab you want to jump to and it will take you there effortlessly. I usually like to keep 2 Chrome windows open, one for work related tabs and the other for social media and personal emails. Tab Manager allows you to see all the tabs of all your open Chrome windows in one place.
2. TooManyTabs for Chrome
Another great extension to try is TooManyTabs, which we talked about a while ago. The advantage of this extension is that it is visually much more beautiful than the previous one and gives a map-like appearance, making it easy to identify which tab that is. The whole look can be customized too, plus there are nice options for sorting from different tabs like Sort by Name, Sort by Web Address and Sort by Creation Time. There is also a tab count on the icon itself, which always gives you a quick idea of the number of open tabs.
It also gives one You are here ID so you know where your current tab is, among the countless other open tabs in Chrome. Additionally, if you press the yellow arrow next to the top of the tab, it will move to the empty Suspended Tabs section on the right. This feature is similar to pinning a tab, which temporarily closes that tab so that it can be opened at a later stage. While this extension doesn’t work to show you all open tabs in multiple windows of Chrome, it does have a nice option to export tabs to Firefox, if you prefer. This can be found in the extension’s Options menu and your existing tabs in Firefox will not be affected when you do this.
There is also an option to return up your tabs as a simple text file to Google Drive, which is something I personally have never found really useful, to be honest. Note: We also did a review of Tabs Outliner which may be more suitable for advanced users
3. Quick tabs
Quick Tabs is very similar to Tab Manager in the way it looks and handles tabs. You get all your open tabs lined up in neat rows with a search box at the top and a nice addition of the Recently Closed section at the bottom, showing the tabs you recently closed. This is the same feature which Google Chrome also gives by default, but you don’t have to search for it in Chrome’s menu.
While this extension shows the number of tabs in multiple Chrome windows, it doesn’t show up as a separate section like Tab Manager. However, it does show the number of tabs on the icon itself, which reflects the number of open tabs in all Chrome windows. Right-click on the icon and click on Options and you will notice some interesting choices that the developer has included.
Not all keyboard shortcuts may work, but the developer is working to bypass Chrome’s default keyboard shortcuts to improve this extension.
