Guide: How to Launch Default Incognito Mode in Chrome
I mixed up Incognito mode with normal Chrome windows countless times. That’s why I often have a hard time starting Chrome in incognito mode without kidding upMaybe it’s just me, but I believe it’s mainly because Chrome has adopted dark mode. Both normal and incognito tabs now look practically the same, right? However, I don’t want to just ditch dark mode in Chrome. That’s why it can be so useful to always learn to start Chrome in Incognito mode. This will reduce the chance that you will forget to enter Incognito mode after opening the browser. But how do you do that? If you’re willing to spend a few minutes, you can easily create a shortcut that will make it easy to open Chrome in Incognito mode. You can make that on Windows and macOS. On Android and iOS, it’s even easier to start Chrome in Incognito mode if you know that. So read on.
Google Chrome – Windows
Always starting Chrome in Incognito mode on Windows is pretty easy. You need to create a desktop shortcut by adding a simple command line to the default file destination. You can also do that with the shortcut already on your desktop. Or you can duplicate the shortcut (with Copy and Paste) so that you have two shortcuts: one to start Chrome in normal mode and one to always start Chrome in incognito mode. Note: If you don’t have a Chrome shortcut on your desktop, open File Explorer and go to Local Disk (C :)> Program Files (x86)> Google> Chrome> Application. In the application folder, right-click the file named ‘chrome’, point to Send to, then click Desktop. Step 1: Right-click on the Chrome shortcut on your desktop and select Properties.
Step 2: Switch to the Shortcut tab in the Properties dialog box. To follow up by adding a single space to the file path at the end of the target field. After that, insert the following command line: -unrecognizable The file path should then look like the screenshot below. Click Apply and then OK to save your changes.
Step 3: Double click on the shortcut and Chrome will always launch in Incognito mode every time. In my case, I have two Chrome shortcuts on my desktop that allow me to open Chrome in normal mode or incognito mode. To avoid confusion, I have given them the correct name.
If you want to prevent the shortcut from starting in incognito mode, delete the command line ‘–incognito’ from the Target field via Properties and save your changes. Did you knowPrivate browsing or browsing in incognito mode does not hide your browsing activities or prevent others from poking around your browsing activities. Using a VPN service helps prevent just that by masking the physical location and IP address. We recommend ExpressVPN (sign up via this link and save 49% on an annual subscription).
Google Chrome – macOS
Unlike Windows, you cannot edit a Chrome shortcut on macOS to ensure that the browser always starts in Incognito mode. Rather, you need to create a simple script for this. Don’t worry, it’s pretty easy to do that. But there are a few things to keep in mind. First, the script won’t do that feature a Chrome icon. Instead, it looks like it really is: a script. Second, the script won’t work if you already have Chrome up and run. In such cases, you have to manually open Incognito tabs. Step 1: Open the AppleScript editor. Type apple script editor in Spotlight (shortcut Cmd + spacebar) and hit Enter to do that. On the window that shows up, click New Document.
Step 2: Copy and paste the script below into the AppleScript Editor: run the shell script “open -a / Applications / Google Chrome.app –args –incognito”
Step 3: Open the File menu and click Save.
Step 4: Type a name for the script (something identifiable), select a location to save the file (Desktop is the most useful), and select the file format as Application. Finally, click on Save.
Step 5: Use the script when you want to start Chrome in incognito mode.
You can also pull it up to the Dock and use it alongside the normal Chrome shortcut for added convenience. But you shouldn’t have normal Chrome windows in the background when using the script.
Google Chrome – Android and iOS
To always open Chrome directly in incognito mode on Android, you don’t need to modify shortcuts or create scripts from scratch. Instead, the Chrome icon already features that functionality. Just tap and hold it for a second. After that, you should see a context menu – tap New Incognito Tab and you’re good to go.
The same goes for Chrome on iOS. And you don’t need a device with 3D Touch either, as Haptic Touch starts rules from iOS 13. Long press the Chrome icon and tap New Incognito Tab. You can do this on any iOS device (iPhone or iPad) running iOS 13.
Tip Also the Chrome widget on iOS features a shortcut to open Chrome in Incognito mode. Go to the Today View (leftmost screen of Home), then tap Edit to enable the Chrome widget.
Go incognito
Being able to always open Chrome in Incognito mode helps to avoid confusion to a great extent. After following these methods, I don’t have to waste time clearing the browser cache to delete private searches just because I forgot to go incognito. You also save yourself from doing those extra clicks by starting Chrome and then spending two clicks to restart it in Incognito mode. The next up Herb up your Chrome Incognito experience with these three great extensions.
