How To Fix ‘The ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT Error’ Issue – Guide

Connection timeout error is not harmful error or infected file that can cause damage to your system. This message is mainly the notification that the system cannot connect to the server. First, let’s understand how the Internet works. When a user enters a keyword into the search bar or the URL of any website, the system sends a request to the server to allow access to the website’s content. After the server verifies the request and gives the system permission, the connection is established and data packets are shared between the system and the server. The Internet has evolved into one of the largest networks, connecting the entire globe and facilitating data exchange. But there are some bugs that make it difficult for the Internet to work normally, which ends up affecting the efficiency of users when working on the system.

Check your connection

Google Chrome, Firefox and Edge recommend that you check your network connection. While this might seem obvious, they all point to check your connection first as it is one of the most common reasons for the error. Here are some things we recommend:

restart your home or office router

This only takes a few minutes and solves more problems than many people would like to admit. To completely turn it back on, unplug the power supply and wait 30 seconds before plugging it back in.

Check if you are on a bad or slow wifi connection

This is a common occurrence in busy public WiFi hotspots such as cafes or airports.

Temporarily disable firewall and antivirus software

Firewalls and antivirus software are designed to protect users and their systems. They regularly scan your device and automatically block any suspicious activity. However, this kind of security can sometimes lead to connection issues. This is because firewalls can often block websites they don’t need or reject perfectly safe content. To check if this is the case for you, disable your firewall and antivirus programs. Of course, this is only recommended if you’re sure the site you’re about to visit is safe. Also, you should only disable this type of software temporarily. Turn it back on after verifying that the error is resolved so that you are not vulnerable to attack. If you repeatedly encounter errors due to your firewall or antivirus software, consider changing your usage.

Disable proxy settings

You may sometimes get the error ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT when using a proxy service. This is usually very rare, especially on the client side. However, one may have been discontinued without you knowing. Follow the steps below to disable or ensure no proxy settings are enabled. Access your Chrome browser’s settings menu. This will open the full menu of options. In the System section (you’ll need to click Advanced below to see this) you should find an entry titled Open proxy settings. Selecting it takes you to the corresponding menu: Your next step depends on the system you are currently using. Windows users should click on LAN Settings and uncheck Use a proxy server for your LAN. If you are a Mac user, you should immediately find yourself in the dedicated menu. Then you need to disable all selected proxy protocols and check if the ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT message is resolved.

Change DNS servers

The next thing you can try is to change your DNS servers. By default, DNS servers are assigned automatically by your ISP. But you can try temporarily changing them to a public DNS server like Google or Cloudflare. Google and Cloudflare aren’t perfect 100% of the time and there have been a few instances where we’ve noticed that going back has fixed the issue. This is especially true if you are using a WiFi hotspot at an airport or coffee shop.

Write down all existing settings in case you need to revert. Click on “Use the following DNS server addresses”. Enter the following or replace the existing one with these:

Release/Renew DNS

You can also try flushing your local DNS cache. This is similar to clearing your browser cache. It could be that the website you are trying to visit is not resolving to the correct IP address. If you’ve just migrated your WordPress site to a new host, it’s important to wait for things to fully propagate. This can sometimes take up to 24 hours, although it can be as little as a few minutes. This depends on your DNS provider and the TTL value of your DNS records.

Clear browser cache

Web browsers store information in your computer’s cache. This includes your browsing history, saved login details and cookies – all of which are collected to load relevant pages faster on your next visit. While useful, caches can cause a number of problems when they become out of date. Fortunately, this issue is easily resolved by clearing your cache. But before doing that, you can easily check if it is a browser cache issue by first opening the browser in incognito mode. Or you can try a different browser. If you still see the error, proceed with clearing the cache. In this example, we use Google Chrome. First open the main menu (in the upper right corner of the browser window). You can click on Clear browsing data.
