I have previously expressed my dislike of PDFs as a format for files in general. But it is something I cannot escape. That is why I have written about it extensively how to improve the experience. Today we’re getting the PDF experience from the cloud and the PC and straight to the Chrome browser. Chrome is the most powerful browser out there. So powerful, in fact, that Google sells laptops called Chromebooks, which are basically just a Chrome browser and nothing else. By using extensions and apps, which even work offline, you can use Chrome to easily view, annotate, print and export PDFs. But you should know that these extensions won’t replace a full-fledged PDF editing app like Foxit Reader. What they will allow you to open PDFs, copy text, add text and mark up and annotate a PDF very easily.
Remarkable PDF
Remarkable PDF is a free extension for Chrome that also works offline. You must create an account to get started; this also allows you to use Notable’s cloud storage to save documents and changes.
Click on the remarkable PDF icon in the extension bar to get started. From the next screen, you can drag PDFs from your computer or choose documents stored in Google Drive. The app is fast. So fast, in fact, that it’s sometimes hard to tell if it’s a native Windows app or just a Chrome extension.
Once the PDF has loaded, select a tool from the sidebar. Here’s a rundown of all the things Notable allows you:
Highlight, underline and strike out written text with customizable colors Write text anywhere in the PDF, change font size and color Highlight text and make comments just like in Google Docs
When you’re done, Notable PDF lets you export the PDF without annotations, with superimposed annotations, or with just a copy of the annotations.
PDF viewer
If you’re not happy with Chrome’s built-in PDF plugin, we’ve already told you how to turn it off and force any pdf link to be downloaded to your pc. Now there is one more, more feature-rich alternative in the form of this PDF Viewer extension.
Once the extension is installed, all PDF links will open directly with PDF Viewer. PDF Viewer makes it easy to copy text into a PDF, something you can’t do with the standard PDF plugin for Chrome.
