Guide: How to Disable Instant Messaging on Tumblr
Instant messaging from the Tumblr feature is an essential part of what makes the blogging platform so different and unique from others. But while it’s nice to chat with just about anyone at first, you sometimes get tired when that message box sounds non-stop all day long. Turning off your activity status is a viable way to discourage ardent fans from asking for your attention. Still, even that may not be enough if you have many followers messaging you anyway. So, can you do something about it? Unfortunately, there is no native setting to it feature. However, you can tone down the number of messages you receive to only blogs you follow – which essentially translates to turning instant messaging off for good. And if you don’t have a hard time using extensions, you can also use an XKit add-on to hide Tumblr’s instant messaging feature out of sight. Sounds good, right? So let’s get started.
Limit people who can message you
Tumblr has a handy option that can significantly reduce the number of messages you receive. Once you turn it on, only people you follow can message you. And honestly, that’s just as good as turning off the feature, especially since it’s rare for a followed blog to even make a note of you. Therefore, followers or random visitors shouldn’t bother you unless you’ve chatted with them. However, you can permanently block super annoying Tumblr users when it comes down to it, or use an XKit extension to get rid of the chat feature all the way – you’ll read more about that later.
On the desktop
Step 1: On your Tumblr dashboard, click the account icon and Settings from the drop-down menu.
Step 2: If you have multiple blogs, select a blog from which you don’t want people to message you.
Step 3: Turn on the switch next to Messages and wait a moment for the Saved indicator to flash briefly.
Only blogs that you actively follow may message you from now on. Note: Repeat for any other blogs you don’t want people other than followed Tumblr users to post to you.
On Mobile
Step 1: Tap Account, then tap the Settings icon in the shape of a gear. On iOS, you must first select one of your blogs to include up the Settings icon.
Step 2: Tap General Settings, then tap Messages.
Step 3: Tap the Anyone can post option under a blog that you want to prevent users from posting. In the next screen, select Only Tumblrs You Follow Can Message.
Rinse and repeat for any other blogs you want to restrict posts for. Note: If you stop others from sending messages, you are in no way blocking your own message permissions.
XKit Messaging Tweaks Mini extension
Limitation of Reporting feature your list of followed blogs may not be enough, especially since people you’ve messaged with before may still be nagging you. If you don’t want to block such users, it’s time to unleash XKit! If you didn’t know, XKit is a special Tumblr extension with dozens of mini extensions. And with the help of the Messaging Tweaks mini extension, you can hide the message icon and chat window completely from view. Note: Users should still be able to see you and send messages – it’s just that you can’t see an indication of messages received! Unfortunately, you can only use XKit on a desktop. On mobile, consider disabling message-related push notifications for any interruption of persistent users instead. Step 1: Download and install XKit for your favourite browser. XKit for Chrome XKit for Firefox Note: If you are using Firefox, click the file named new_xkit-7.8.2.xpi after clicking the Download button above to install the extension. Step 2: Go to your Tumblr dashboard – or reload it – and XKit should integrate itself with your account.
Step 3: Click the XKit icon in the top right corner of your dashboard to up the My Xkit window. Note: Xkit can do a tutorial to familiarize yourself with the extension – just skip it if you’re not interested.
Step 3: Click Get Extensions in the My XKit window.
Step 4: Find and install the extension labelled Messaging Tweaks.
Step 5: Click on My XKit to return to the previous screen.
Step 6: Click on Messaging Tweaks in the XKit side pane. Then check the box next to Hide the chat bubble completely.
Done! You should no longer be able to see the message icon or chat window.
However, it is still more than possible to start a chat yourself from the messaging option on someone else’s blog, in which case the instant messaging window will show up short for the duration of the chat. Tip There are plenty of other options on the Messaging Tweaks mini extension too, so don’t forget to check them out!
No more distractions
Limiting the post option to just your list of followed blogs should be more than enough when it comes to staying private, especially since people you follow rarely take the time to message you. And you always have the trusted X-Kit extension to hide the messages when things get hairy. Sorry, mobile users! So, any thoughts or suggestions? Let us know in the comments.
