Guide: How to Disable Google Smart Lock on Android and Chrome

I was once in love with Google’s Smart Lock featureThe ease with which it has multiple passwords in Chrome and my phone made my work buttery soft. I no longer had to remember a strange combination of letters and alphabets. I let Google take care of everything for me. Fast forward a few years, I couldn’t help but notice the gaps in this password implementation (I won’t call it a password manager, though). In the absence of a master password, anyone who had access to my laptop could see my passwords. All they had to do was go to Settings> Manage Passwords and click on the eye icon. Moreover, you can count the number of Android apps that Smart Lock support on your phone, on your fingers. Because of this limitation and my tendency to forget passwords, logging into apps like Twitter became an annoying affair, especially when I switched phones Aside from only working in Chrome, Smart Lock does not have a password generator or a dedicated user interface. So it got me thinking. Is Smart Lock Worth The Convenience? Or rather: should I trust Google with my passwords? If you have the same doubts, disabling Google’s Smart Lock isn’t rocket science. So let’s take a look how to do it.

Disable Smart Lock in Chrome

Step 1: In Chrome, go to the browser settings by clicking the three-dot menu in the top right corner. Step 2: Scroll down to the Passwords and Forms option and click Manage Passwords.

You can also type ‘password’ in the search bar above. Step 3: Once inside, turn off the switch for ‘Offer to save passwords’. In the meantime, also turn off ‘Auto Sign-in’.

Disable Smart Lock on Android

Disabling Smart Lock for passwords on Android is more or less a similar (and simple) affair. Simply open Chrome on your Android and go to Settings.

Tap Passwords and turn off the switch for the Save passwords and Auto login options.

What to do with the saved passwords?

Now that you’ve disabled Google’s Smart Lock, what do you do with the saved passwords? You can’t leave them lying around.

Go to the Google password account and click the Delete icon. You can also clear browsing history to remove all passwords from Chrome. Make sure to choose the Time range as Always.

However, for Google’s password account, you would have to choose the manual way to select and delete.

How about Smart Lock for Android

Speaking of Smart Lock for passwords, there is another one feature that falls under the Smart Lock umbrella – Smart Lock for Android.

Designed to make your life less miserable, this feature identifies a few trusted places and saves your phone unlocked when in those locations. Likewise, you can mark a paired device (such as the Bluetooth music system in your car or your smartwatch) as trusted and your phone automatically unlocks when these devices are nearby. However, the scenario ‘Expectation vs Reality’ is very different. First, this feature is quite easy to compromise. Imagine someone running away with you phone and smartwatch together. In that case you will get access to your phoneThe content would be a walk in the park. After all, you left the front door open. To switch this feature off, go to Settings> Lock Screen Security> Smart Lock. This can differ per device. If you don’t find it here, just search for the same in the search bar.

If it’s the trusted place you want to deactivate, tap the place and select Disable.

What now?

So now that Smart Lock in Chrome is gone for good, how do I manage it? In addition to remembering passwords, I switched to Dashlane. Now I just need to remember a master password (* laughs from ear to ear *). In addition to using AES-256 end-to-end encryption, Dashlane also has a clean interface. To get to the main point, it does a great job of remembering all of your passwords and keeping them safe.

Other than that, it also comes with a password health feature and a security dashboard.

Password manager or Smart Lock?

Google’s Smart Lock is one of the easiest ways to get past the login screen, but its security scenarios are far too severe to ignore. So, if you’re considering switching to a dedicated password manager, read the following comparison to help you make an informed choice.
