How to Customize Mac’s Menu bar – Guide
Compared to Windows, the scope of themes on the Mac is really limited. Apple’s walled garden doesn’t offer the same level of freedom as Windows. This, of course, comes with its own set of benefits. Your Mac is much less likely to be infected with viruses, and many Mac applications are superior compared to their Windows counterparts. This means that if you want to change something fundamental about OS X – the appearance of it, for example, you have to go deep. Turn the menu bar to black
It may seem simple, but this is one of the biggest aesthetic updates you can make to your OS X home screen. Especially if you have a Macbook Pro, the black menu bar really matches the black frames. And the best way to do that is by using the Obsidian Menu Bar. The website describes the installation and uninstallation process very well. Just download the application, open the installer, follow the process and you’re done. Just make sure you have deactivated the Translucent Menu Bar option under Desktop & Screen Saver in Settings.
White clock
When you activate the black menu bar, the first thing you notice is the menu bar icons are deactivated and the clock is no longer visible. Unfortunately OS X does not allow you to change the color of the clock, so we will have to install one ourselves. You can download White Clock here. Disable the default OS X clock date and time settings and let White Clock do all the work. White clock offers the same options as the standard clock and you can change the font, font size and even the color of the text.
Hiding icons with the bartender
The bartender ($ 15) is a really sweet utility that cleans up all the clutter from your menu bar. Instead of several icons for different applications in its menu bar, the bartender offers a kind of drop-down menu to access its applications. So, all the apps are still there and working and you can access them by clicking on the Bartender icon, but the menu bar always remains clean. Remove unused icons: Over time, your menu bar can become very confusing. Take some time to reevaluate the properties of the menu bar. Do you really need the Spotlight icon when you have access to better alternatives? You can permanently hide these icons or move them to the Bartender menu with Bartender. A free app like Broomstick offers similar, but limited, functionality.
Rearrange system icons
You can rearrange the system icons in your menu bar by holding the Command key and dragging them as desired.
Manually replace menu bar icons
This requires a little work, but the result is worth it. As with the docking icons, you can also manually replace the icons on the menu bar. Find the application whose icon you want to change in the Finder, right-click and choose Show Package Contents, go to Content -> Features and find the .png menu bar icon. Modify it the way you want it in Photoshop or replace it and click Save.
Make them transparent
If you can’t get rid of them, make them invisible. This is the last resort. If you really need to have the icon in the menu bar, but don’t want to see it, just replace the .png icon file that we found in the section above with a transparent image and that’s it.
