Guide: Fix ‘Sticky Notes Not Working on Windows 10’ Issue
Sticky Notes recently received a much-needed update to Windows 10. I realized that after I started using OneNote again. I know, but for some reason I can’t find the perfect note taking app and keep jumping with ships. Regardless, Sticky Notes is now part of OneNote mobile app (Android and iOS) and syncs across devices. Strangely, it didn’t work as expected on my Windows 10 computer. That prompted me to investigate the problem and I came up with a few solutions. If you are facing the same problem, don’t worry about losing your notes. Here are some helpful solutions to fix Sticky Notes not working issue on Windows 10. Let’s start with the simple solutions first and then move on to the cumbersome one.
1. Update Windows OS
It quickly becomes a ritual for me laptopAnytime there is a problem the first thing I do is check for updates. Very often I find a lonely update waiting to be downloaded and installed. Open Settings by pressing Windows key + I on your keyboard. Select Update and security.
You can also manually check for updates. Install any pending updates to check if the bug has been resolved.
2. Update App
Open the Windows Store and click Downloads and updates.
You can check for new updates and also update all apps with a single click. Check if there is an update for Sticky Notes. I recommend you to use all apps up-to date, as most updates contain patches to fix bugs and security holes.
If there is no update then we have to move to the next solution.
3. Run the troubleshooter
Microsoft equips Windows 10 with a Troubleshooter tool to check for irregularities with built-in Windows apps. Open Settings and search for Troubleshooter. If the option Find and fix problems with Microsoft Store apps appears in the drop-down list, select it.
Click the Advanced option and select Apply repairs automatically.
Follow the onscreen instructions and see if Sticky Notes not working issue on Windows 10 is resolved or not.
4. Antivirus and malware control
Malware and hacking incidents are nothing new. Your computer could just as easily have been compromised. Launch the antivirus software and run a full scan right away. If you don’t have one installed yet, we recommend grabbing one right away. You can also download and run Malwarebytes. Malware is not the same as a virus, so two separate software. The free version is good enough, but I recommend the paid version. Download Malwarebytes
5. Turn off Insights Feature
The insights feature allows users to create reminders in Sticky Notes that work with Cortana. That means you will be reminded of the note on all Windows devices. Open Sticky Notes and click Settings.
Disable Insights and relaunch Sticky Notes to make sure it works and you have all features
If you can’t even open Sticky Notes, then move on to the next step for now, but don’t forget to turn it off once it starts working. You can use Microsoft To-Do to set reminders. That app is also available on most platforms.
6. Reset or reinstall
Open Settings again and click on apps.
Under Apps & features, search for Sticky Notes, click it once and select Advanced Options.
Try the Reset option first. As Windows points out, the app will be reinstalled, but it will not affect your documents. If Reset doesn’t work then delete Sticky Notes. Then download and reinstall it from the Windows Store.
7. Re-register sticky notes
Microsoft recommends that users re-register Windows apps if they are not working properly. To do this, open the command prompt or PowerShell with administrator privileges and issue the command below. PowerShell -ExecutionPolicy Unrestricted -Command “& {$ manifest = (Get-AppxPackage * MicrosoftStickyNotes *). InstallLocation + ‘AppxManifest.xml’; Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register $ manifest} ”
Right-click anywhere on the CMD screen to paste the copied command and press Enter. You don’t have to type it. Restart your computer and check if Sticky Notes works or not.
8. Restore to the previous point in time
I really hope it doesn’t get into this situation. Also, only do this if the sticky notes are really important. That’s because restoring your computer to the previous point from backupup, may delete some files and settings. So if you plan to use this solution, I highly recommend that you have a backupup to make the important data and files. If you are sure that Sticky Notes worked before, you can try to restore your computer to an earlier time. Windows 10 automatically backs up regularlyup. Open Control Panel and search for Recovery and open it.
Click Open System Restore.
You will be presented with a recommended recovery option. Check the date and time. Click Choose a different restore point if you want to go further back in time or need more options.
Select View more restore points to see a complete list. A few days ago I uninstalled Office Professional Plus so Windows created a restore point for that.
Just choose a restore point and follow the on-screen instructions. If you laptopthen plug it into an electrical outlet as the process will take some time. You don’t want your computer to suddenly shut down in the process.
Paste it
Sticky Notes is now much more usable thanks to the much-needed update it recently received. It’s so much easier to share links and text between devices.
