Guide: Fix ‘Google Sheets Won’t Let Me Type or Edit Error’ Issue

Google Sheet allows users to collaborate on one spreadsheet without having to save anything. And all edits are saved in real time. But several users cannot use the major version of Sheets feature and selling point. Many users complain that they cannot type or edit documents in Google Sheets. That means you cannot collaborate with team members and the whole process becomes tedious and time consuming. There can be many reasons for this error. We’ve come up with a few solutions to fix that. Let’s start.

1. Basic steps

These are simple steps that can help fix some common bugs and errors you may encounter while using Sheets. Please refresh the page to reload the file and try again. Close and restart the browser. I don’t see how restarting the computer can help other than freeing up system resources, but it’s worth a try.

2. Fast solution

A quick way to get around this problem is to use the Sheets app on your smartphone or tablet. That not only allows you to work on the file and get work done, but also helps to pinpoint where the problem lies. For example, in Sheets, if you can type or edit in the mobile app but not in the browser, then you have to troubleshoot the browser.

Try a combination of different platforms (Android, iOS, web) and browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Brave) to see what works and what doesn’t. Go to # 8 to learn how to clear cache and data to fix the problem in both browser and mobile app.

3. Copy to new sheet file

Another quick solution could be to copy the contents of the file to a new Sheets file. Just type ‘sheets.new’ in the address bar of a new browser tab to create a new file and try copying and pasting the contents. Permissions will completely lead to determine whether you are facing the same error or not. See if that works for you.

4. Work offline

Do you have a stable internet connection? You can try a different Wi-Fi connection or mobile hotspot. There are two things to do if you don’t have access to the Internet. One is to download and install the Google Docs Offline extension for Chromium-based browsers. The other step is to enable the Work Offline option for Sheets in the browser settings. Your work is saved to your Google account when your PC reconnects to the Internet. So can you type and edit in Sheets while in offline mode? Download Google Docs offline

5. Google account

You must sign in with your Google account before you can edit or type Google Sheets. Of course we often end up open sheets with different domain accounts and that should work if they are part of the G Suite family.

Click View Only button and you’ll see a message specifically asking you to sign in with a Google account. Refresh the page and double check if you can edit or type Google Sheets.

6. Permission to view or edit

Whether you can only view, comment or edit a Sheet file also depends on the access rights you have been given. Usually, the creator of the Sheets document provides these permissions. You may be in View Only mode or only be able to comment on the file but not edit or make changes.

That’s another reason why you can’t type or edit in Sheets. Send an email to the administrator / creator and request editing rights. You can also click ‘View only’ button and send a request for edit rights.

7. Extension conflicts

I use a few extensions that help me with work and other browsing activities. Sometimes some extensions can cause conflict. Open the Sheets file in Incognito mode and see if you can type or edit it. If yes then you have to disable all extensions / add-ons and re-enable them one by one to find the culprit.

You can also enable half of the extensions at once. Then you know if the conflict is the result of which half and repeat the process (8> 4> 2> 1) until you get one left. Get an extension manager for your extensions and it will make your life a lot easier.

8. Cache and data problem

App data and cache files could be responsible for the error. This applies to both the internet and mobile app from Sheets. The steps may vary slightly depending on your browser or your make and model phone Here are the steps for the browser. Open Settings and under Advanced or Additional settings you will find the Privacy and security heading. Click here on Clear browsing data.

Select ‘Cookies and other site data’ and ‘Cached images and files’ in the Advanced tab. You can also choose Time range to choose between days, weeks and more. Keep in mind that performing this process will log you out of all sites and services open in the browser. So make sure to save everything before proceeding.

Log back into your Google account and open the Sheets file. Can you type or edit in Sheets now? Here are the steps for Android phonesOpen Settings and go to Apps> Manage apps> Sheets app.

Tap Clear data and select both options one by one. Sign in again and check if you can type or edit in Sheets.
