Guide: Fix ‘Copy-Paste Not Working’ Issue on Windows 10
The copy paste feature in Windows 10 is often taken for granted. It’s as easy as pressing the shortcut keys Ctrl + C then Ctrl + V on your keyboard. We use it several times a day to make our job easier. Everything seems fine until copy and paste stops working on your Windows 10 computer. Of course, you must have disconnected and reconnected your external keyboard a few times. But what if that happens on one laptop Some users reported that copy paste was not working in certain app, while others said it was not working in Windows 10 OS. Of course there is no way I can talk about all the apps involved in this mix-upHence, I’ll cover some common Microsoft apps that most people use. Of course none of these tricks would work if those switches are borked. Let’s start.
Copy and paste does not work on Windows OS
When you can no longer copy and paste text, files and folders from one app to another or anywhere on your Windows 10 computer, it is time to take a serious and close look as it is a system wide issue.
1. Reset Remote Desktop Clipboard Process with Administrator Rights
In Windows, the Remote Desktop Clipboard process is run with the name of the file rdpclip.exe when Windows starts. Step 1: Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc combo on your keyboard to launch Task Manager and look for rdpclip.exe in the Details tab.
Step 2: You can not find it? Click File> Run New Task and type rdpclip.exe and select the ‘Create this task with administrator rights’ box. Hit Enter.
If the rdpclip.exe service is already running, right-click on it to select End Task and restart it as shown above.
Here’s another way to restart the rdpclip.exe service for those who can’t find it in Task Manager. Zoom in on the following folder structure: C: WindowsSystem32 Search for rdpclip.exe, right-click it and select Run as administrator.
You’re not done yet. You should also search for dwm.exe and run it with administrator privileges as well. Step 3: Restart your computer and check if you can copy and paste in Windows 10 or not.
2. Restart Windows Explorer
That will close all open apps and windows. Save all work before proceeding with this solution. Step 1: Restart Task Manager and find Windows Explorer in the Processes tab. Step 2: Right-click on it and select the option Restart.
A reboot is not required in this case, but we recommend it. Check if the copy paste works or not.
3. Clear the clipboard history
Clearing the clipboard history and cache files can also help with the error. Step 1: Locate and open Command Prompt (cmd) from the Start menu. Click Run as administrator to run it with appropriate permissions.
Step 2: Type the command below and hit Enter to run it. echo off | clamp
Step 3: Restart your computer and check again if copy and paste works or not.
4. Antivirus apps
An antivirus or malware app may be responsible for the error. Try to disable it before checking again if the copy and paste works or not. There is no need to disable Microsoft apps such as Windows Defender. Only disable third-party security apps.
5. Run the troubleshooter
Step 1: Press Windows key + I to open Settings and search for ‘Find and fix keyboard problems’ in the search box. That’s because in Windows 10 we mainly use the keyboard to copy and paste.
Step 2: Click Advanced in the popupup that follows and select Apply repairs automatically.
Step 3: Click Next and then follow the on-screen instructions.
This is also a good time to check your keyboard for physical damage and errors. You can also use the right mouse button to copy and paste text or URL to check if that works normally.
Copy and paste does not work in Windows 10 apps
There are too many apps on the Windows platform and it is not easy to cover them all. If the problem is limited to a selected app, have you tried reinstalling it? Always install apps from the Microsoft Store rather than downloading the executable from sketchy sources.
1. Send to Bluetooth add-on
This solution is for Microsoft Office users. Disable the Bluetooth add-on if you have one installed and check if that helps.
2. Webroot security software
If you are using any of their products then it can cause the copy and paste problem. Open Webroot and go to Identity Protection> Application Protection and find the app where you cannot use the copy and paste function. Set it to Allow. I would also recommend that you turn off the Protect clipboard data option there.
3. Skype Click to call
The Skype Click to Call plugin allows you to make Skype calls directly from your browser. The same plugin is also responsible for causing copy and paste problems in the browser and even Windows operating system. Remove the plugin and see if it helps.
Try third-party clipboard managers
The default clipboard manager works, but there are much better options available on the web. We’ve covered two great clipboard managers for Windows that let you do a lot more than just copy and paste text, links, and other things.
Be original
