Two-factor authentication (2FA) codes act as a layer of security to protect your credentials from hackers. It’s like a watchful guardian. A popular 2FA code generator is Authy which has some advanced features which are absent in apps such as Microsoft Authenticator. But what if Authy codes don’t work when you need them the most? Therefore, you cannot log in to and access your account. It’s ironic. While the problem may seem serious, there are ways to fix it. Without further ado, we have to look at a few solutions that can help you get your security back on track. Let’s start.
1. Check Authy account information
Open the app and tap the Settings icon in the shape of a gear at the top. The screenshots below are from Authy for iPhone and the layout may vary slightly if you are using an Android phone
You will see your Authy account ID, email ID and mobile number you used to create this account on the My Account tab. Everything looks good? The phone number used to set up 2FA code must match the phone number used to register your Authy account. You can get a phone number change if you used a different number to scan the named account.
2. Use backup codes
Any app, site, or service that provides two-factor authentication feature provides backup codes at the time of creation. You should have written it down in a safe place, preferably offline or online with strong encryption, in case of an emergency. Usually backup codes are displayed after you scan the QR code with Authy app. Try one of the backup codes to login until you can fix the Authy codes not working error.
3. Synchronization time
Time is of the essence when it comes to 2-factor authentication apps such as Authy. Have you noticed how a new code / token is generated every 30 seconds? Time plays an important role here and the time of your smartphone must be properly synchronized with the official time. Are you synchronizing the time manually, don’t want to use the internet to set it, or are you traveling to a different time zone? You must set the correct time under Settings> Additional settings> Date and time.
Turn on Automatic date and time and Automatic time zone. The location and options may vary slightly depending on the device you are using.
Google recently updated its Authenticator app with the option to automatically sync and correct the time settings on your smartphone. Perhaps Authy will follow suit.
4. Clear cache and data
To be on the safe side, you should clear the cache and data of the Authy app and start over. This method only works for Android users as there is no way to clear cache on iPhones and iPads. Step 1: Open Settings> Apps> Manage apps and search for Authy. Select it.
Step 2: Tap Clear data at the bottom of the screen and select both Clear all data and Clear cache.
5. Use option for multiple devices
Well, it only applies to those using a multi-device configuration, where Authy is installed on more than one smartphone. Some users like to have multiple Authy accounts to separate their work and home life. Ideally, you should see the same Authy ID on all devices for the codes to sync correctly. If you see several IDs, your main ID (Authy account) is the one that also has your current one phone number. You can check it as shown in point 1 above. Step 1: For the 2FA code that does not work on your main Authy account, log in to that 2FA account’s website (e.g. Facebook) and use the 2FA code on your other or second device to login. You can also use a backup code. Then turn off the 2FA code option. Step 2: Open your main Authy account on the smartphone and delete all devices except the one that says this device under Settings> Devices.
Step 3: You will now re-add the 2FA account as you did before to make sure everything is in sync. Step 4: Enable the multi-device option if it is not already enabled, let newly added account sync and remove Authy and reinstall it on your main device.
The 2FA codes should now be synced on both devices, display the same code on both devices at the same time, and both should work for you to login. Note: You can also contact Authy support. They are very responsive and should be able to fix it for you.
