Guide: Fix ‘Amazon Echo Not Playing Music From Spotify’ Issue

For some users, Alexa says it plays Spotify but no sound comes out. For others, their Echo device is not listed up from the list of available devices in Spotify. Some have the problem only while playing certain Spotify playlist. We will try to help you fix various issues that you may face while using Spotify with Echo. Let’s take a look at the fixes for Echo not playing music from Spotify.

1. Restart Echo and Phone or computer

Tip Set up Echo for the first time? Check out our tips configure up Echo like a pro.

2. Increase the echo volume

Another simple thing that we sometimes miss is the Echo volume. You need to check and increase the volume of your Echo speaker. You can do it from the Echo device. To do this, press the volume up button on your Echo. Or open the Alexa app on your phone, you will find the song that is now playing at the bottom. Tap the speaker icon and increase the volume.

If you’re using the Spotify desktop apps, you’ll find the volume slider at the bottom.

3. Check the compatibility of Echo and Spotify

In most countries you need a Spotify premium account to connect Spotify and Echo. So if you are unable to listen to Spotify then lack of premium account can be a problem. In countries like Australia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, India, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Spain, UK and US, even Spotify users with a free account can connect to Alexa . Spotify continues to add new countries to the list. You can check the supported Echo devices and countries for them on the Spotify page. It’s important to properly link your Spotify account to the Echo device using the Alexa app. If you want Alexa to always play music from Spotify instead of other music services after pairing, you must set Spotify as the default music service provider. Check out our guide On how to link Spotify and make it default in Echo. When you set Spotify as your default provider, you don’t need to add ‘on Spotify’ at the end of your command.

5. Check the playlist name

Always try to use the correct commands for Alexa so as not to confuse her. Here’s a list of official Alexa commands that can be used for Spotify.

If the Echo doesn’t play your playlist, try adding the word My to your command after giving the correct commands. For example, “Alexa, play my Super Nova playlist.” If it still doesn’t work, take a look at your Spotify playlist names. Do not add punctuation marks, difficult titles or abbreviations to the name. Also, don’t save similar playlist names like Super Nova 1, Super Nova 2, etc. To rename a playlist, open the Spotify app and tap the Your Library tab. Open your playlist and tap the three-dot icon at the top.

Choose Rename Playlist from the menu. Assign a simple, unique name. Sometimes even the radio stations are responsible for “buffering” music playback. So if you ask Echo to play an artist’s song, the device might tune in to a radio station on Spotify that might be having issues. Again, these problems can be temporary. However, if they persist, then you should check other solutions.

6. Check the name of the ultrasound device

In addition to the playlist names, you should also check the names of your Echo speakers (if you have more than one) and groups. Neither of them may have the same name. To verify that, open the Alexa app and go to the Devices tab. Here you will find your groups and ultrasound devices. Open the group or device and you can rename it.

7. Use the correct account

Often times, the problem occurs because of an account conflict where a user has two different Spotify accounts: Free and Premium. Your phone sometimes defaults to the free account, making Spotify unavailable to users from countries where a premium account is required. So you need to add the correct Spotify account to the Alexa app. To do this, disconnect your free account (as shown below) and add the account with a premium subscription. Spotify is of course also available to users with a free subscription, but in selected countries.

8. Turn off Shuffle

This solution might surprise you, but a few Spotify users have suggested that if shuffle the last time you listened to Spotify, it would cause problems with Echo. So disable shuffle on Spotify to fix the problem. To turn off shuffle, open the Now Playing screen in the Spotify app. Tap the green shuffle icon to turn it off. You can also turn it off from the desktop apps.

Next, you should try to unlink your Spotify account and Skill from Echo. To do this, follow these steps: Step 1: Open the Alexa app on your phone Step 2: Tap the three-bar icon at the top and choose Settings.

Step 3: Tap Music followed by Spotify.

Step 4: Tap Disable skill. Confirm on the next screen.

Step 5: Go back and tap Enable to use for the Spotify skill. Follow the onscreen instructions to add your Spotify account again.

You can also do it on the Internet. To do this, go to your account settings followed by Apps. Then click Remove access next to Alexa.

10. Make Spotify forget your Echo device

Forgetting Echo device from Spotify app has also proven beneficial for users. To do this, open the Spotify app and go to the settings. Tap Connect to a device. You will find your Echo device. Tap the three dots icon next to the speaker and select Forget this Device.

11. Update apps

It is a good choice for your apps upto date as they fix bugs in the app. You need to update the Spotify and Alexa apps from the respective stores on Android and iOS. Open Play Store (Android) and App Store (iOS) and search for the name of the app. Then tap Update button Tip Not sure when to update an app? To learn how to find out when an app needs to be updated on Android and iOS.

12. Clear cache and data (Android only)

On Android, you can try clearing the cache for the Spotify and Alexa app. To do this, go to your phone Settings> Apps> Spotify or Alexa. Tap Storage followed by Clear cache. Deleting the cache will not delete your files or data.

13. Delete the app

If Spotify still won’t play through the Echo, you will need to remove both apps (Spotify and Alexa) from your phoneReboot your phone and then install them again.

Be patient

Since Echo devices are automatically updated over Wi-Fi, leave it for a while (maybe half an hour) and it will automatically receive an update. Restart your ultrasound. Hopefully things will have to be resolved then. The next up: Spotify has stiff competition from Apple and YouTube Music. Find out what the best music streaming service is via the following link.
