Guide: Bulk Delete Slack Files: Tips and Tutorial

Floppy free plan users know the dangers of sharing too many images and gifs. Over time, the 5 GB storage plan will run out, and you will be faced with the message ‘your file is safe and sound, but …’. And after a few days, Slack won’t let you upload new files unless you delete the old ones. See you soon, collaboration? Well, we want to differ. Slack does not have a built-in method to delete all your shared files. However, there is a handy solution that can help you do that. Named Deletion, you can view your old files and then delete them. Visit Slack Deletion So what are we waiting for? Let’s take a look at how Deletion works.

What is Slack Deletion?

A slack Deletion is an open-source tool developed by Toronto-based developer Drew Minns. It uses the Slack API to determine which files are available for deletion. While team members can only delete their shared files, admins can delete public files.

Since Slack does not develop the tool, you may be concerned about your privacy. The good Reddit folks at Reddit have checked the code and found it safe. Plus, you can revoke access at any time (which we’ll see at the end of the article).

What are the supported file types?

The good news is that Deletion supports many file types, be it a PDF or an image. Plus, you can filter according to file type and continue.

How to Use Deletion

Step 1: Log in to Deletion with your Slack ID, as you must authorize this tool to access your profile information, files and comments.

Step 2: Tap the Channels drop-down menu in the left corner. Choose one to delete files from a particular channel. Otherwise, select All channels. Note that All channels also contain private channels.

Select the date range and file types, then click Get File to view all the files that match the search criteria. The bar at the top also shows the number of files and the space they occupy.

Step 3: Now it is time to remove them. There was one before button to delete all files at once. However, Slack has limited the number of simultaneous requests from APIs to their server. Simply put, you should delete the files one by one. Here you could say what the point is? I might as well remove them on Slack. And you are partly right. But Deletron offers you the advantage of sorting the files by date and size. This way you can make room for the new ones by deleting the larger files first. Win-win, if you ask me.

All you need to do now is sort the list and tap Delete buttonWhile the task can get repetitive, the message at the bottom is a little motivator.

How to Revoke permissions for Deletion

As mentioned earlier, the tool does not save your profile or workspace information. Although it is definitely good practice to revoke permissions for apps that will not be used for a long time. After all, you never know about privacy and security anymore. To do this, go to Slack, tap Apps and search for Deletron. Select it to lock it in your Slack window.

Now tap on Settings to open the configuration page.

All you need to do is scroll down and click the Delete (trash can) icon. That is it. You are all sorted now!

How to Check the use of space

In the future, you may want to monitor space usage. To do this, click on Workspace (just above your name) and select Analytics.

That will open a new tab in your browser and show you the number of messages sent and the file storage status. However, this is the total count of your workspace.

Slack It Away!

So this was how we can get rid of unnecessary files from your Slack and free up some storage space. Though I really wish Slack offered a more natural option to select and delete all junk files at once. I also had no objection to the existence of an option to delete files from the private channels. Hopefully we’ll see some upgrades soon. What additional options would you like to see in Slack in the future? More importantly, you have a super handy one tip parts? We’d love to hear them in the comments section below.
