Guide: Best Websites For Reading History
I personally never made much use of history at school. But strangely, I find that now that information is so readily available on the Internet, I go back in time and look for information that can be classified as ‘history’. Could it be that the web has made history cool again with simple text and multimedia instruction? Probably; and you might feel the same too, because these four interesting websites take you back in time.
History.com
If you follow the channel on TV, you will easily fall in love with History.com. The site isn’t all about upcoming TV schedules. It is full of videos that take you into the background of the full-fledged shows. Then there is the superbly curated range of history topics supported by videos and audio. All that learning sometimes calls for a break – so head over to the Games section which is based on historical trivia. My favorite part of the site is This day in history because reading it all at once takes me on a discovery of something new and helps us connect today with what happened today in the past.
Film story
Filmstory.org is one of those gems hidden between biggies like IMdB and Rotten Tomatoes. Yes, it is primarily a movie site. But more importantly, it is a website that combines the entertainment of movies with history. As we all know, probably half the world understood what the Titanic tragedy was through James Cameron’s epic film. Filmstory is an interactive resource that explores the relationship between film and history through an interactive medium. Explore history and films by era, region, subject and film type. Each film sometimes covers many themes, and if you study history through films, it can be helpful to understand history through these themes.
British Pathe
The British Pathé is one of the oldest media companies in the world. And that in itself results in a great wealth of archival footage that has been captured over time (that’s from 1902). Rest assured that the journals that are now digitized and available on the site cover every major event of the last century, when most of us weren’t born yet. Their About page states that their collection of journals is total up up to 3,500 hours of filmed history with over 90,000 individual items. Here, all professional uses require a license fee, but the site offers free “preview” facilities that anyone can take advantage of to learn about the history as it happened in the 20th century.
Time search history
Time Search History takes you on a trek through history using timelines. It is actually a history search engine. The site (and its timeline) has indexed over 10,000 events to date. You can use it as a traditional search engine using keywords, or look for historical events in areas where they happened and the estimated time. Every item discovered with the timeline search is also linked to other sites such as History.com and even Google. The search results are also linked to the Google Images search results. So, which one would you choose for a history class? All four? You may also have your own suggestions to offer. Shoot away in the comments.
