Blood
Bloodborne’s system of connecting two players for cooperative play through terror-infested Yarnham is a fantastic crutch for carrying you over obstacles you couldn’t overcome alone. But like the similar system in the Souls series, it only becomes easy to use once you learn the rules of engagement – which are vague to say the least. Plus, through Bloodborne’s asynchronous multiplayer systems, you catch shadows of other players going through the same hell as you, and for a moment, while neither of you can interact with each other, you’re not completely alone. That little flash of humanity is as effective as it ever was. It’s not as new as when we first saw it in the Souls series, but I still love the ability to leave messages for players using the notebook and receive them from others. Messages are fixed with strings of canned words such as, “[Beware] [Ambush]”, or something similar, and left on the map for others to see. While players will occasionally lie and ask you to take a leap of faith into oblivion in half-broken sentences, they are generally helpful, and there are some improvements to sentence structure and vocabulary this time around. Nier: Automata
It’s a story I thought I’d heard before. It’s the distant future and the land is in ruins. Machines have replaced humanity and therefore must be destroyed. See the ethical dilemmas, the friendly machines. Cue the crisis on a broken concrete stage and of course the bloated orchestra. Nier: Automata gave me a lot of what I expected, but it also gave me a lot that I didn’t have. Even when I saw the twists and turns, there was always some surprise, some small (or not so small) knot I had left to undo. That premise isn’t the only thing that felt familiar. Mechanically speaking, choosing Nier: Automata up for the first time can result in déjà vu. Combat starts on the proven foundation of light attacks, heavy attacks, dodges, and combo streaks. Then there are the flying units, used sparingly for some of the bigger and more hellish fights. Bullet Hell-style gameplay (which often involves dodging complex waves and enemy projectile patterns during the fight) figures in boss fights and hacking minigames as well. While not my favorite genre, it never felt heavy, or like it was getting in the way of more direct attacks. Buy
Monster Hunter: World
Monster Hunter: World is a third-person action game about mastering the food chain and being okay with it. He is known for his routine final game where you undertake increasingly complex and challenging hunts across diverse and tangled open worlds in search of rare items needed to craft a set of armor that will undoubtedly crown you the min-max champion of the world. But the essence and greatest strength of Monster Hunter is its tense, desperate and tragic fights with beautiful beasts that can last almost an hour. It is also about the gentle colonization of ‘new’ lands and the slaughter of native species. Monster Hunter is a grotesque fantasy, but if you can put up with the merciless and repeated slaughter of the beautiful children of the dragon god, you’ll find an excellent, never-ending action game that tests reflex and intellect in equal measure. Final Fantasy VII Remake
The fact that the Resident Evil 3 remakes and Final Fantasy 7 arriving just a week apart is amazing, especially since they couldn’t be more different in their approaches when it comes to a “remake”. While RE3 is a more faithful modernization of its original, Final Fantasy 7 is less of a remake and more of a complete reinvention. It swaps turn-based combat with thrilling real-time action and expands the first stage of the original story by dozens of hours – including with a little too much padding and some tricky new plot points. The long wait for this revival might not be a perfect reunion, but with or without nostalgia at play, it’s still a great JRPG in its own right. Sure, Final Fantasy 7 Remake is actually just the first in what is planned to be a series of as-yet-unknown duration that, if completed, will retell the entire story of the 1997 classic JRPG. This game only covers the events that take place in the city of Midgar, where Cloud Strife and his allies fight for freedom against the evil Shinra corporation that runs it. That means roughly the first five hours of the original were stretched out into a campaign that took me over 33 hours to complete, and there are still a few optional gems I left out. Buy
Diablo III
Diablo 3: Eternal Collection for Nintendo Switch includes the Diablo 3 base game, its Reaper of Souls expansion, as well as the Rise of the Necromancer bundle. Set in a world besieged by angels and demons, you take on the role of an adventurer on a quest to save humanity. And while the narrative is relatively straightforward, Diablo 3 on Nintendo Switch brings the same level of polish and detail to its moment-to-moment gameplay that has made other versions of the game incredibly fun. From dodging enemies with the flick of the analog stick to stringing together a barrage of attacks, the controls in Diablo 3: Eternal Collection for Nintendo Switch are extremely responsive. Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age
Dragon Quest 11 might just be the best example of a Japanese RPG I’ve ever played: it’s a great example of the genre, but that doesn’t necessarily make it a great game. It’s been a long time since I played a turn-based JRPG, but my problem with Dragon Quest 11 wasn’t just the usual adjustment period when starting a new game. It was with the game as a whole – because it’s just a bunch of game. And while it may seem absurd to complain so much for the price, its length raises a comparison between quantity and quality. Dragon Quest 11 often extols the virtues of the former at the expense of the latter. The world of Dragon Quest 11, Erdrea, is rendered in a smooth cel-shaded style that is fantastical, immersive, and beautiful. And Erdrea is huge. There are dozens of locations you can visit, each with its own visual style and population of NPCs useful to varying degrees. You can find out where you are in the world from the landscape or architecture, or even the way the characters speak. As with a lot of Dragon Quest 11, the scope feels huge and deep, but ends up being limited and rather shallow. Buy
Final Fantasy XIV
Final Fantasy XIV Online is an MMORPG, so its multiplayer core sets it apart from the franchise’s single-player experiences. However, the game embodies a well-crafted story with exceptional dialogue, thoughtful and highly engaging gameplay systems, fantastic settings, and a ridiculous amount of content. He also gives you the reins, making your created avatar the centerpiece of the narrative. The latest expansion, Shadowbringers, offers even more content, including new regions, story development and gameplay tweaks. Final Fantasy XIV Online feels like a love letter to the series as well as fans, and it’s an experience not to be missed. Buy

Persona 5 Royal calls itself the definitive version of the game and features an extensive list of improvements – if you’ve played Persona 5 before, you’ll definitely notice how P-Studio has worked to fix some common grievances. New items help in combat, such as talismans that buff multiple stats at once, more food and drink that replenish SP, and many new accessories, including rings that you can place on your team members so they can use spells they normally don’t. have access to. Coupled with wonderfully flexible combat and a story that tackles unexpectedly deep themes, I found it difficult to walk away from Horizon even after finishing its main campaign some 40 hours later. There’s a lot more flexibility to be found when Aloy is out in the big world. Horizon’s combat is its most attractive feature, thanks to the variety found in 26 distinct species of animal-like machines that roam its great expanse in the distant future. These beasts have a number of weaknesses that can be scanned using Aloy’s Focus (a folklore-friendly device that offers Witcher-like heightened senses), and hitting different spots can have different results that change the way a fight unfolds. Dark Souls III
That’s what makes Dark Souls 3 so profound. Sure, the thrilling, punishing combat and notoriously tough battles are its titanium skeleton, but the language and ambiguity of the world is its flesh and blood – the beating heart that imbues an excellent third-person action RPG with mythical authenticity. Marked only by a few performance issues, Dark Souls 3 is one of the most captivating and cohesive games I’ve ever played, and the most focused and powerful game in the series. Enemy design is more diverse than ever; long-haired skeletal spider people sucked on my face, fire witches reduced me to ash a hundred yards away, and the quadrupedal ice knights Irithyll cut me down up in a large bowl of frosted flakes. Alone, they’re already a challenge, but I’ve rarely encountered a villain without a friend. The well-paced level design kept the frustration of death to a minimum. Bonfires and unlockable shortcuts normally showed up just before I ran out of healing items and more importantly willpower. Buy
