Once you’ve escaped that messy opening, you can race against the clock to complete the circuit (choosing up the weird extra seconds here and there killing an old lady crossing the street), or you can focus on turning around, finding the rest of the competitors and destroying them.
Asphalt 8: Airborne
Asphalt 8 Airborne is a very successful racing game, dangerously tied to a frustrating business model. The sheer sense of speed and momentum, natural controls, and richness of content make it highly recommendable, but it tends to put up unnecessary roadblocks with constant reminders that you can get around them. Asphalt is long, offering eight seasons of increasing speed classes and 180 races in total, as well as a complete online mode with all available maps and race types. Most races are standard multi-car or one-on-one matches. Some modes offer more inventive race types. The infection quickly became one of my favorites – it gives all “infected” pilots unlimited boosts, but with the constant threat of burning when the infection passes if you can’t increase the time by spreading it.

If you’ve played Alto’s Adventure hell, you need to be patient. The game looks very similar at first. If you haven’t, well, you control Alto or one of several other characters on a sandboard as they make their way through desert environments. Yes, sandboarding is a real thing, and it’s amazing. Part of the hook for Alto’s Adventure was that it was an endless backflipping runner like Ski Safari ($0.99), but very beautiful. And Alto’s Odyssey gets a-up adventure in terms of creating a stunning atmosphere. The desert environments are stunning, and the biomes the game features come with their own elements to set them apart and provide a unique flavor to each run.
